This is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard.
Last weekend, a church group in North Carolina arrived at Moore Square, just as it has done for the past six years, to hand out free breakfast sandwiches and coffee to the homeless and hungry.
It is an honorable act of kindness and one that you would think is worth praise. But apparently, in Raleigh, NC, there’s some kind of ordinance in place to prevent such a thing. I tell ya, it’s a good thing the government is there to protect us!
Sarcasm aside, the police were quite stern with the criminal element that showed up on that Saturday morning, armed with breakfast. The do-gooders were told quite simply that if they attempted to distribute the food, they would go to jail.
But wait, it gets better.
Apparently, the church group was informed that if it wanted to return to distribute food, it would have to pay $800 for a one-day permit. Which, by the way, was something that was unlikely to be approved according to the officer serving and protecting that morning.
The man who runs this group, Hugh Hollowell, certainly does come off like a criminal though. Check him out here, speaking at a TEDx conference:
