Hackers Drain Potential Millions from Amazon Accounts

Last week, Amazon.com completed its investigation into hundreds of third-party seller accounts that had been breached and drained of potentially millions of dollars.

Hackers managed to unlock seller accounts and change information to redirect funds to their own bank accounts.

And it’s not the first time this has happened. In 2016 and 2017, sellers on Amazon’s platform complained of tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of fraudulent transactions and unapproved transfers, too.

But this year, the number of accounts and amount of money stolen was so large that the online retailer couldn’t ignore it any longer.

That’s because when it identifies fraudulent transfers, even if it can’t get the money back, it still makes up the loss to the merchant or customer. And that’s costing the company more and more each year.

It’s most likely that it wasn’t Amazon’s systems that were compromised. The company concluded that the seller information was likely obtained through other hacked companies (think Target and Equifax) and then sold on the dark web.

The company is working with Barclay’s and PrePay Technologies to track down the stolen funds and bring the hackers to justice. The banks were “innocently mixed up in the wrongdoing,” as hackers moved money through accounts there.

So the thieves will either get caught or live life on the lam from now on. Neither end sounds great to me. And all for just a few million dollars. Not a good plan from the start.

Especially when there’s a way those hackers could’ve “skimmed” even more from Amazon’s accounts and not broken the law at all…

We’re Legally Stealing Billions

It’s called Prime Profits. And it’s pretty simply a multibillion-dollar payout from Amazon.
