We’re only 10 weeks into the year, and there have been almost two-dozen school shootings.

As of March 2nd, there were a total of 19 shootings on school campuses across the U.S.

That statistic comes from a nonprofit organization called Everytown for Gun Safety.

Everytown for Gun Safety defines a school shooting as “any time a firearm discharges a live round inside a school building or on a school campus or grounds.”

This is terrifying news. It’s not something you want to hear, especially if you have kids of your own.

It’s definitely not something you want to experience firsthand. You say goodbye to your kids in the morning as they go off to school. You never expect it to be the last thing you say to them.

You shouldn’t have to prepare yourself for that kind of reality.

Despite the increased occurrence of mass shootings, we’ll never become desensitized to these horrific and violent acts.

And we shouldn’t have to.

An Increase in Violence

2018 has had an unusually violent start. It has people scrambling for ideas on how to prevent school shootings to finally put an end to deadly behavior.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, there were a recorded 65 school shootings in 2017.

We’re in the first three months of 2018 and have had close to two-dozen school shootings. The outlook for the rest of the year isn’t too good.

Obviously, there’s a problem here… a problem that continues to grow and that needs to be fixed before it gets bigger.  

Which brings us to the gun debate.

Do we need to adjust gun legislation to make it harder to get access to guns, especially for those people who are mentally ill?

Stricter legislation will make it harder for someone to get access to guns, but it doesn’t guarantee that they won’t be able to find other ways to obtain weapons that are intended to take innocent lives.

Is This the Solution to a Deadly Problem?

Trump has spoken out about two issues involving guns and school shootings.

First, he’s advocating for teachers and coaches to be armed with guns in case there is a shooter in a school.

After the recent shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school, Trump criticized a sheriff’s deputy for failing to stop the shooter. He believed that teachers would be better at defending students because teachers would know those students and step in to defend.

At the Conservative Political Action Conference, Trump said, “A teacher would’ve shot the hell out of him,” when discussing shooter Nikolas Cruz, who killed 17 people and wounded 15 others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Trump believes schools need well-trained and gun-adept teachers and coaches who would be able to carry concealed firearms at school.

Second, Trump wants to increase the age limit for semi-automatic gun buyers from 18 to 21. You can legally buy a handgun at the age of 21. If you aren’t allowed to buy a handgun until you’re 21, why are you able to buy a semi-automatic gun at 18?

Senator Jeff Flake is working on bipartisan legislation with Senator Dianne Feinstein that will increase the minimum age for buying an AR-15-style rifle from 18 to 21 for non-military buyers.

Senator Flake tweeted:

A kid too young buy a handgun should be too young to buy an #AR15.

Having teachers and coaches armed with concealed guns could be very problematic.

It would mean there would be more guns in a school. The access to weapons increases. Anything could happen… mistakes could be made.

Don’t get me wrong; I think we do need to put some kind of preventive measures in place. The number of school shootings that happen each year is increasing.

There needs to be some changes. Schools need to not only feel safer, but be safer.

There’s a technology and device that could do just that. And it won’t compromise the rights of law-abiding citizens owning firearms.

Could This New Device Be the Answer?

This device and its technology are revolutionary and could be a more practical solution than having every teacher in America possess a gun.
