Could Verizon Take the Lead in the 5G Battle?

The 5G battle continues, and it just got even hotter. Verizon announced that it plans to deploy a 5G network in Los Angeles later this year.

5G is the next generation of wireless network. A next generation network will be crucial for all of us. We’re going to need 5G to support everything that’s in store for us in the next decade.

Technology is improving, and every day we rely more on having a wireless connection. That means we’re going to need a network that can support all of our devices and interactions.

Verizon announced earlier this month that it will be rolling out 5G wireless home broadband internet services to consumers across four U.S. cities by the end of the fourth quarter of 2018.

“I think we’re a lot closer than people think,” says Verizon chief executive Lowell McAdam. “We’re locking in on four this year.”

Establishing a 5G wireless home broadband service in four U.S. cities is going to be huge for the company — and it’s just the beginning.

The first cities the company is targeting are Los Angeles and Sacramento. Verizon plans on announcing the other two cities toward the end of the year.

Four cities this year could turn into 10 cities next year. This year will be a trial, and if all goes well, it could mean a dramatic increase in Verizon’s valuation.

Verizon’s 5G Plans

Verizon will offer carrier plans for 5G with Fixed Wireless Access. This type of plan will provide connectivity through wireless mobile networks instead of the traditional cable form.

It’s trying to get a head start on establishing its 5G network because the company wants to be the first U.S. carrier to officially launch commercial 5G technology.

Verizon is a huge company that has been very ambitious in recent years. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that it wants to be a leader in 5G technology. It’s another smart direction that could very well prove to be extremely successful for Verizon.

Verizon’s CEO Lowell McAdam said:

We’re charging ahead. I have never seen a technology that is as disruptive and has as much benefit to consumers as 5G.

Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti had this to say about Verizon’s 5G plans:

Innovation, hard work, and creativity are the foundation of Los Angeles, and that’s why we are proud to partner with Verizon to be one of the first cities in America to start building their 5G network for businesses and residents, which will open doors to opportunity and inspire the next generation of tech leaders and entrepreneurs.

Not only will rolling out a 5G network be good for Verizon, but the cities involved will also reap the rewards of this brand new network.

5G Technology

5G is the next generation of wireless network. This brand new network is going to improve and change the way we interact with the internet and how we store our data.

There are three important benefits that 5G will bring to our lives.

First, it’s going to be faster, giving us the opportunity to move more data and at a quicker speed.

Second, it’s going to have lower latency. That means the network will be more responsive.

Third, it’s going to be a stronger network. It’ll be able to connect a lot more smart devices at once. This will be ideal for technologies that have a lot of sensors, like autonomous vehicles.

5G will work using a system of cell sites that will divide their territory into specific sectors, which will then send encoded data through radio waves. Because 5G networks will consist of networks of small cell sites, we could start to see the end of those huge wireless towers that are huge eyesores.

Qualcomm says 5G will be able to boost capacity by four times over current systems by leveraging wider bandwidths and advanced antenna technologies. And as I mentioned earlier, we’re going to need a boost, as we have more smart devices and technologies relying on a stronger network with a higher capacity.

What Does This Mean for Verizon?

Verizon will be in a better position to compete with AT&T, Alphabet, and rival cable providers like Comcast and Charter Communications.

As consumers in the U.S., we’re not left with many choices when it comes to internet providers. That all could change with Verizon’s emergence into the home internet market. Verizon has the potential to become a huge competitor to these companies that have been in the lead for decades.

Not to mention Verizon’s presence in this market could also significantly increase its subscriber audience because it will be one of the first companies to provide consumers with this brand new and faster 5G network.

An increase in its subscriber audience will mean more money for the company — and not only more money, but also consistent money. Consumers want the best that’s out there, and if they have the opportunity to be connected to a faster and more reliable network like 5G, then they’ll take it over the other choices.

We’re still at the beginning of this battle. The next few years are only going to get more intense.
