Another Reason Cannabis is a Socially Responsible Investment

The Evils of Capitalism Will Make You Wealthy

The title of the article was, “The Undeniable Evils of Capitalism.”

The guy who wrote it was clearly a fool.

If there’s one thing that really fires me up, it’s some moral do-gooder who seeks to place the burden of blame for the world’s problems on what is the greatest force for good in the world: capitalism.

The truth is, I actually take offense to the suggestion that those who seek to utilize capitalism as a mechanism to wealth and prosperity are somehow evil. Especially when you consider that capitalism is also the greatest catalyst for positive change in our world today.

No Apologies

If you’re a regular reader of these pages, you know that I’m incredibly opposed to the war on drugs.

Without a doubt, the war on drugs has been one of the most violent wars ever waged against the global community. This is one of the reasons I invest in the legal cannabis space.

To put it simply, I seek to invest in and profit from companies that are making it possible to facilitate the end of the drug war.

It should also be noted that the companies that provide medical marijuana to sick folks who need it are doing something that is worthy of praise.

Yes, the folks who start medical marijuana companies seek to profit from their ventures. But that’s not why most start them. Most start these companies because they want to do one simple and honorable thing: help sick people get better.

Of course, in my line of work, I do often get overwhelmed with the profit angles...

How can I not only support these companies in their efforts to do something positive, but also profit from them? And I make no apologies for this. The truth is, if these companies can’t be profitable, no matter how much good they want to do, they’ll never be able to accomplish their righteous goals.

That being said, sometimes I’m reminded why I started investing in the legal cannabis space in the first place. And last week, I got that reminder.

An Unbelievable Chain of Events

On April 12, 2010, Harper Howard was born with a rare genetic disorder called CDKL5 epilepsy. At two weeks old, Harper began having severe seizures. At her worst, she was having 40 seizures a day, and none of the conventional therapies were working.

I had a chance to speak with Harper’s mother, Penny Howard, last week at the Cannabis World Congress and Business Expo. She told me Harper’s story, and I knew I had to share it with you.

You see, this little girl was born with a disorder that would undoubtedly take her life. And while her life was certain to be short, her mother did not want those short years to be “unlivable.”

So, as any good parents would, Penny and her husband searched frantically for something that would ease their daughter’s seizures. And they found it in CBD oil.

CBD oil is extracted from the stalk of the hemp plant, and it has a wide range of medical benefits, as Penny Harper soon discovered.

Within two weeks of using the oil, Harper’s seizures were cut in half. And after honing in on the right dosage, eventually, the seizures ended completely. What followed was exciting.

Here’s an excerpt from a piece Penny had published in the Huffington Post:

In 2013, after watching Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s CNN special “Weed” and endless hours of research online, we found a CBD oil from hemp called RSHO - and really, that’s the only thing that not only brought us hope, but stopped Harper’s seizures ... completely.

I’ll never forget giving the CBD oil to Harper and seeing the immediate impact it had on her quality of life. Within the first three days we had eye contact and verbalization sounds from her, an attempt to interact with us physically and she was now able to show us that she was with us mentally. It wasn’t long before she went a day without a seizure! And then another day without a seizure!

Before we knew it she was at 45, 50 then 60 days without a seizure. Harper even came out of her stupor, her shell, and interacted with the family, we got her little personality back. She got to meet her baby brother Seth after he was born late in 2014.

How was this even possible? After three years of living in hell there was finally light! Harper does not simply exist here on Earth but rather she lives!

For every person who says there is no proof that cannabis has medicinal qualities, I present Harper’s story (as well as thousands of others).

But Harper’s story really hit home with me.

You see, Harper’s journey didn’t end when she died on January 8, 2016.

In an effort to share Harper's journey with others, Penny Howard started a non-profit called Hope4Harper. And this is where the journey continues:

Without knowing just how far it might reach, I launched “Hope 4 Harper,” a Facebook and blog where I set out to document Harper’s struggle with CDKL5 and how RSHO hemp oil stopped her seizures and helped give some of her life back.

How could I ever know that Katiele Fischer, a mother of another CDKL5 daughter Anny Fischer in Brazil, would find Harper’s blog from thousands of miles away as she desperately searched for her own answers?

From half a world away, Katie found Harper’s blog and had RSHO shipped to her illegally from relatives in the U.S. to Brazil. She documented everything with a doctor and lawyer.

Just like Harper’s, Anny’s seizures started to disappear. When the worst happened and Katiele was caught importing the CBD oil illegally, Katiele did something that inspired even our family.

In April 2014, Katiele stormed up the steps of ANVISA, Brazil’s FDA, and sued the federal government of Brazil for her right to access RSHO to save little Anny.

In just three days, ANVISA ruled that it would be “inhumane,” to keep CBD oil from Anny, setting a legal precedent that would end up changing the world. Dozens of families across Brazil sued the government after Katiele’s ruling, revolutionizing cannabis laws in the ninth-largest economy in the world forever.

As things stand today, Brazil is not only allowing CBD hemp oil to be imported into Brazil as a medication with a doctor’s prescription, the Brazilian government is subsidizing the payments under their healthcare system. And now, Brazil is allowing CBD from hemp to be imported for more than epilepsy, but also for several other medical indications, including Parkinson’s disease and chronic pain.

Think about this chain of events.

An entrepreneur had an idea to produce CBD oil in an attempt to provide an alternative medication for sick kids.

The mother of a sick child discovers this oil and is able to successfully treat her daughter with it.

That mother spread the word and another mother, more than 5,000 miles away, discovers the oil and treats her daughter with it. Then the mother in Brazil gets the entire country of Brazil to allow other sick children to use the oil.

This chain of events didn’t start with some random person saying, “I want to make a boatload of cash.” It started with someone saying, “I want to provide a valuable product and make money in the process.”

Any person who rants and screams about the evils of capitalism should be referred to the case study of Harper Howard.

Personal Profits

I won’t lie.

Over the past few years, I’ve made a lot of money by investing in the legal cannabis space. And this is not a trend that’s going to end anytime soon. But there’s more to this than just landing a few double-baggers — which we’ve done on more than one occasion by investing in the right legal cannabis companies.

While the monetary profits continue to help me build wealth, the personal profits go far beyond watching my portfolio gain in value.

You see, every single time we invest in a legal cannabis company, we are not only availing ourselves of the opportunity to create wealth, but we are also contributing to the betterment of society.

Whether it’s helping end the highly unethical war on drugs or helping people like Penny Howard provide for their sick children, our “capitalist ways” are without a doubt contributing to a more prosperous and just society. You just can’t get any better than that.

To a new way of life and a new generation of wealth...
