A Ballsy Solution to the Social Security Mess

Time To Sell U.S. Citizenship

By Christian A. DeHaemer
Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Two days ago, I was driving my six-year-old to the store, and the subject of her grandparents' retirement came up.

During the conversation, she discovered the concept of Social Security.

"You mean you get paid to retire?" she asked, suddenly excited about the possibility.

"Well," I said, "your grandparents get paid. And I might get paid fifty cents on the dollar... but I doubt you will see anything."

"Aww, man... "

The poor girl just discovered the concept of paid retirement and had it taken away, all in an afternoon. This is when it really hit me that we are indeed stealing from our children.

Why You Should Listen to Walmart

Whatever you think of their politics, you can't argue that Walmart makes money.

So when they make a business decision, 9 times out of 10 it's wise to listen...

In fact, we've been following one energy investment of theirs that could end up handing you over 19 times your money.

Click here to find out more.

We Don't Need No Water Let the #$@#!@ Burn!

As I write this, the Obama Administration is pushing a health care entitlement nobody wants and that we cannot afford. And yet, beneath the fold of most front pages is the disturbing fact that this year — for the first time — Social Security will pay out more than it takes in.

In fact according to Investor's Business Daily, the government will pay out $29 billion more than it takes in through the payroll tax.

The good news is that the Social Security trust fund (remember Al Gore's lockbox?) has been funded to the tune of $2.5 trillion in anticipation of this event. The bad news is that according to the AP, those are only paper assets. It turns out Congress spent the money on other programs.

The IBD says, "Social Security's unfunded liability for future decades now stands at $17.5 trillion, an inconceivable amount of money."

That is quite a hole. Perhaps the leaders of this country should do what they always do and simply issue more government debt?

U.S. Credit is Maxed Out

Moody's, the world famous rating agency best known for closing the barn door with self-assured tardiness while in the pay of the horse, said that the United States, Great Britain, Germany, and France had a one-way ticket to debtors' prison.

The Ca-rated Moody's went on:

... debt levels in the four large credit-worthy economies had reached the point at which they are at risk of being downgraded — a step that would drive up interest rates, increase borrowing costs and mark a turn in perceptions about the world economy... growth alone will not resolve an increasingly complicated debt equation. Preserving debt affordability at levels consistent with AAA ratings will invariably require fiscal adjustments of a magnitude that, in some cases, will test social cohesion.

Social cohesion? I think that's economist speak for riots — the same kind that took place 1967 in Detroit, Michigan; in 1894 in Pullman, Illinois; and in Athens, Greece, just last week...

I can imagine torch-carrying, pitchfork-wielding peasants burning lower Manhattan and K Street. One can only dream.

The sad truth is that rioters rarely get those who are to blame. Generally speaking, they just destroy their neighbors' property.

As American as Apple Pie

But don't worry, dear reader, your humble editor has a plan.

I believe we're looking at all this debt and unfunded liabilities in the wrong way.

The problem is that back in 1950, there were 100 workers for every six retirees. But come 2050, there will be about one retiree for ever two workers. My daughter will be 46 at this time and she doesn't really want to give 65% of her income to a retiree, having her own kids to raise and a hover-car to pay for.

The way I see it, we have two options: We can go the old school route and let those who can't contribute to the tribe, nobly wander out into the woods to meet the Great Spirit on their own terms like proud warriors...

It's the Denominator, Stupid

Or because that's not politically attainable, we can simply increase the denominator.

In this case, the denominator is the number of workers. This is brilliant.

You see, it might be true that the elites in this country such as Wall Street fat cats, ambulance-chasing lawyers, and Washington lobbyists don't actually add value to the economy.

It also might be true that the U.S. manufacturing base has been packed up and shipped to China... and that our education system produces slack-jawed slackers...

But there is one thing this country still has going for it. And that, my friends, is that people really want to live here.

Heck, folks will climb into a wheel well of a 747, even brave the shark-infested waters off the coast of Cuba in a converted panel truck, just for the chance at the American dream.

Let's face it, being a U.S. citizen has tremendous perceived value.

Here's the Deal

What we do is we put the American Dream on eBay and auction it off. I'm thinking half a million dollars as a reserve bid — 100,000 blocks at a time. I'd be willing to bet that over the years, we could not only get around 300 million people paying for the right to live in the United States... but that these same people would also be paying into Social Security.

Drastic times call for drastic action, and citizenship is about the last thing we have to sell.

As Bernie Madoff would tell you, the first rule of any successful Ponzi scheme is expansion, expansion, expansion...

Who's with me?

Sincerely,

when you keep bashing health care i wish you would research all thoser "uninsured" someone is paying for. i know the hos[itals get paid and charities pick up a lot of it but some of it is paid for by those "insured" people. doesnt itmake some sense to collect a couple of bucks from them and reduce your
'bill?

Your comments in this article are surely symptomatic of what is currently wrong with a large number of clueless liberals (progressives, socialists, communists or whatever you want to call yourselves)who think that being citizens of this country gives them the right to ignore the constitution and setup a corrupt dictatorship to represent us.

If you like communism, move to Russia, China, Cuba or Venezuela.

The answer to our social security shortfall is to end all of this liberal stealing of our freedom and shoving bills down our throats that we don't want. The solution to Social Security's shortfall could be easily corrected if the lunkheads (democrats and republicans) would eliminate the 26th amendment to the Constitution and replace the current income and other confiscatory taxes with the Fair Tax Plan. To find out how it would work go to fairtax.org and do a little research. Expand your mind beyond wanting to be a ward of the state.

Our government does not care about you. The government wants to impoverish and control you for their selfish and greedy use.

Actually, I agree with you. We should sell green cards to the highest bidders, get rid of rule that lets relatives in, and require them to buy a house within 12 months. We would skim off the best and brightest of the world and solve our housing crisis at the same time.
Comment by Doug on 2010-03-17
This is a stupid idea. Just raise the amount of wages that the social security tax is paid on. Tax all wages, but keep the maximum benefit where it is now. Now all those millionaries get to participate in SOCIAL (Socialism) security
Comment by Terry on 2010-03-17
This is not a new idea. The Romans did this shortly before the Roman Empire collapsed.
Comment by I. Cotton on 2010-03-17
I know your article was mostly tongue-in-cheek but there is a way to do what you suggest through a sensible approach to immigration reform. Most illegal immigrants don't pay social security. I don't advocate amnesty, but rather a civil fine approach where an illegal immigrant goes before a judge, shows evidence of not having committed any serious crimes, and accepts a fine of, say, 10% of income for 5 years while applying for citizenship. This way they don't get a free ride for sneaking in, we collect the fines, and the denominator for social security gets larger.

We can argue about the size of the fine, but we need to do something abut these people. We can't deport them all and we can't grant amnesty (not politically acceptable), so I think this is a compromise that can work.

Christian,
Good idea,I was a immigrant 15 years ago,started a small business,now employ about 100 people.Could I do it
today? I don't think so.New taxes,reg

If you think Madoff ran a huge scam, Amway has ripped off millions of people for several decades, to the tune of 10s of billions of dollars.

Amway is a scam, and here's why: Amway pays out as little money as they can get away with, so they support the higher level IBOs ripping off their downline via the tool scam.

As a result, about 99% of IBOs operate at a net loss, while the top 1% make several TIMES more from their Amway tool scam than from the Amway products. This was made illegal in the UK in 2008, but our FTC is unable to pull their heads out of their butts to stop it here.

Read about it on my blog, I suggest you start here: http://thenetprofitgroup.yolasite.com and forward the information to everyone you know, so they don't get scammed.

A cute idea but where in the world would you find 100,000 people let alone 300 million people with $500k to spend just on citizenship that are not in the US already? Just sayin..............
Comment by Mike Costello on 2010-03-17
1st: The Romans offered citizenship to mercenaries to fight distance wars. Soon non-Romans were in upper government positions and the rest is history.
2nd: East Phoenix is now part of Mexico. They don't want to be Americans. They think this land should be returned to Mexico. Next time you land at Sky Harbor, head out to E.Van Buren St. instead of heading for Scottsdale. Make sure there is a couple of hours of daylight left.

MUCH OF WHAT YOU SAY, I AGREE WITH. THERE IS SOME MIS-INFORMATION ABOUT S.S.
1)IT IS NOT INSOLVENT. IT IS THE ONLY GOVT. PROGRAM THAT IS SOLVENT. IT IS STILL LENDING TO THE GENERAL FUND WHICH OUR CONGRESS IS WASTING AND THEN TELLING YOU IT IS BROKE. ON SEPT. 30, END OF U.S. FY2009, WE OWED $11.933T OF WHICH $4.335T WAS IN UNMARKETABLE SECURITIES TO FED PENSIONS AND MOSTLY TO S.S. IF THESE ARE DEFAULTED, OUR T-BILLS AND BONDS WILL BE UNSELLABLE.

ADDING MEDICARE AND MEDICAID TO S.S. WAS TERRIBLE, SHANE ON LBJ. THEY ARE A DISASTER AND SHOULD BE SOLVED W/O USING OLD AGE AND SURVIVOR'S BENEFITS.

TROUBLE IS AHEAD, ESPECIALLY W/ REDUCED PAYMENTS IN DUE TO UNEMPLOYMENT. THERE ARE 17 DIFFERENT ACTIONS AND COMBINATIONS THAT WILL SOLVE FICA LONG TERM.

2) THERE IS NO TRUST FUND; IN FACT, TREASURY IDEBTIFIES 5 WITHIN THE S.S ADMIN AND CALLS THEM THAT AS DOES S.S.

3) S.S IS AN UNSUSTAINABLE UNDERFUNDED LIABILITY. BULL, IT IS THE OTHER ENTITLEMENTS, OFF THE BUDGET WARS, A VORACIOUS MILITARY AND INTEREST ON THE FAST APPROACHING $14T DEBT.

CONCLUSION; IF CONGRESS WOULD SOLVE THE ISSUES, THEY WOULD NOT HAVE THE ISSUE TO PROMISE THEY WILL SOLVE IT IF ONLY YOU RE-ELECT THEM. THEY WILL DO NOTHING EXCEPT KEEP BUYING YOUR VOTES W/ YOUR MONEY.

A quote from Christian DeHaemer's article of 3/17/10:
"You see, it might be true that the elites in this country such as Wall Street fat cats, ambulance-chasing lawyers, and Washington lobbyists don't actually add value to the economy."
Congrats, Mr. DeHaemer! I've been trying to tell the world for several years that not all jobs are equal, yet that's exactly how statisticians and politicians count jobs. Some jobs (notably in manufacturing, agriculture, extracting natural resources and creating intellectual property) create new money in the economy. Other jobs (notably in preparedness and government) suck money out of the economy, with little/no benefit to the populace. Until we realize this disparity in value of jobs (independent of pay scales), we'll never improve the present economic mess.

I'll expand on this situation, if you're interested.

Your idea is interesting, although I think the govenment would foolishly spend any money made.
I'm sure I know why SS is going broke this year instead of 7 years from now. People are paying less into the system than normal because their incomes are lower on the average - unemployed, reduced pay, or lower profits. Also, I think a lot of prople who would be working are going on SS instead of getting another job. Improving the economy would help both. Not enough, though.
Instead of 2 people supporting 1 SS recipient, I think they will also be supporting maybe 1/2 a government worker and 1/2 a welfare recipient, or 2 workers suporting 2 people. If we get 1/2 the people off welfare and government employment, it would be maybe 2.5 workers supporting 1.5 people. I like the idea of workfare - have people on welfare and unemployment do work, like build roads, prisons, schools, or the like.
Helping the private sector instead of hurting it would help these things. One good step would be expediting drilling in Alaska, off the coast, etc, which would help in many ways. The feds would get more lease money, real jobs would be created, etc. Also stop adding nasty regulations that are killing businesses. Completely kill big bad new economy-killing proposals like Obama health care and cap and trade.

IT'S THE DENOMINATOR..STUPID..

You are so right on this, but you make miserable light of it after that point.

What we have to do is increase the demoninator by cutting off the welare and early Social Security suck-ups, drop the double and triple dips Government jack asses..especially most of the Military clowns that did nothing but sit around Fort Ord for 20 years playing cards..(if they served overseas or in any actions against the United States, no problem, they are deserving, but not the bums that sat in the chow hall or taught the nifty little classes at the Universities for 20 years)

Shut down these five generation families of welfare and in all cases, NOTHING to any il-legal, no meds, no social security, no nothing! You people know the way home, leave.

Now, maybe your denominator will increase and more people will be paying into it and less bums be raping it. And put it back in a Trust Fund where the damn Congress does not have any access to it.

Years ago the government borrowed money from the Social Security Fund and never paid it back. Now there will be a deficit for future generation.

Maybe I'm nobody, as you say, but I am strongly on favor of the Health care reform that the Obama administration is supporting. Fuzzy wuzzy socialist liberal pinko or any other names you come up with don't change the fact that we voted in Obama to reform health ccare, and he is.
Comment by Maggie Cole on 2010-03-17
If Congress did in fact steal the Social Security monies they had best find a way to put them back and then we the people limit the Congressional Terms to Two only or 8 years and eliminate all pensions for them. They can receive Social Security for the "quarters" spent WORKING for the nation. I am sure that will equalize the SS system in a hurry.

Live, flesh and blood workers pay taxes, including Social Security.
Robots do not pay taxes.
How many workers have been replaced by robots?
Comment by Steve Jongste on 2010-03-18
A much more simple fix, have every taxpayer pay an equal percentage. After all why should a person making $50,000 a year pay social secuity tax on 100% of their income while a person making $1,000,000 a year pay social security tax on 10% of their income! I bet the fund would be solvent in a year.

The idea of raising the value of US citizenship to what it is actually worth is a great one. But I fear that the idea is doomed as long as citizenship is given free to anyone born inside the borders. For those born inside the borders, a citizenship test needs to be passed. Outsiders would still need to pass the test of civic knowledge and duty, but in order to take the test they would have to pay first.
